Alice is a frumpy daydreamer with ink-stained fingers and painfully big feelings, escaping into the clacking rhythm of her typewriter after yet another clash with her mother. She longs for a life bigger than the small poems she churns out about the tedious people around her. Beneath her awkwardness and dramatic sighs hides someone deeply curious, emotionally chaotic, and hungry for beauty, magic, love, and transformation.
Alice romanticises almost everything. A strange glance, a beautiful song, a cigarette in the rain, the idea of running away with somebody mysterious. She dreams of becoming a “real artist,” though she has no clue what that actually looks like beyond being adored, understood, and finally feeling special. At the same time, she is deeply insecure, constantly looking to others for validation. Her imagination is both her greatest comfort and the thing most capable of swallowing her whole.
Her journey through Glimmerditch cracks her open completely, pulling her into a world of queer chaos, strange creatures, and beautiful madness she never knew she needed. The deeper she falls into other people’s fantasies, desires, and delusions, the more she begins to question what “normal” even means. Because if the world makes no sense at all, why not invent one yourself?
